Benjamin Bakall, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Benjamin Bakall originates from Uppsala, Sweden where he completed his medical degree and earned a PhD focused on identifying the gene for the inherited retinal disease Best macular dystrophy. He continued his research at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he also performed an internship in general surgery and a residency in ophthalmology. He completed a two-year medical retina fellowship at the University of Iowa that included research on inherited retinal diseases. Dr. Bakall has a special interest in research and monitoring inherited retinal diseases such as Stargardt disease, Best macular dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa and Usher syndrome. He has published several research papers in prestigious scientific journals and presented his findings at international research conferences.

Dr. Bakall has received several awards for his research in inherited retinal dystrophies including the Anders Wall award for the best young scientist in Sweden, the Swedish Research Council postdoctoral fellowship award and the Foundation Fighting Blindness Alan Laties career development award. He has been an invited speaker at the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, the University of Arizona and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

He is a board certified ophthalmologist and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the International Society of Genetic Eye Diseases & Retinoblastoma and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is licensed in the states of Arizona and Iowa.

Bakall is currently dedicated to treating and monitoring medical retinal diseases from more common conditions including age-related macular and diabetic retinopathy to rare inherited retinal dystrophies. He is excited to bring specialized testing methods to Arizona including multifocal electroretinogram and semi-automated kinetic visual field.
